BACK IN the car, Steve tapped his fingers on the steering wheel and looked at Bob. “If you ask me, Enrico didn’t murder Randolph. He had no motive to kill his ex-lover. He’s happy with Tony Burke, and their alibis sound believable.”

“Maybe we’re approaching this murder all wrong. We’ve struck out on all the obvious suspects,” Bob said, rummaging in the compartment for some candy. Unwrapping a peppermint for himself and one for Steve, he said suddenly, “That’s it! I know what was wrong with Tony! Did you see his eyes? The pupils were dilated. Either he was high or he’s on some powerful painkillers….”

“Really?” Steve frowned. He thought back, picturing Tony in his mind. “I only noticed that his hands were trembling. I thought it was because he was nervous, but you could be right. He’s really a big fan of Steps to Heaven. Do you think he’s involved in the drug trade there? Does his money really come from his father? Think of the big house, the garden….”

“Might be, I’m not sure.” Bob chewed noisily on his peppermint candy.

“Do you mind?” Steve opened his mouth while concentrating on turning left at the corner.

Bob shoved another candy between Steve’s lips. “You’re such a spoiled ass.” He smiled. “Maybe this has to do with the club,” he said seriously. “We may be working on one big case instead of two. So many loose threads lead back to Steps to Heaven.”

Steve sighed. “Bob, we’ve got to get back to Culver City and write up these statements, see if anything more has turned up from forensics.”

“I told you it would be wiser to wait until Enrico was in our fair city.” Bob crumpled the candy wrappers.

“Maybe you’re right,” Steve admitted, accelerating the car. The trip had been a bust. But they’d managed to talk to three suspects in the case in less than two days and been able to spend time together too.

Steve sighed again, leaning his elbow out the window of the Thunderbird.

Bob put a hand on Steve’s thigh, squeezing gently. “We’re fairly certain that Enrico wasn’t involved, and we can concentrate on other suspects. We still have to question Randy’s other friends and relatives,” Bob said. “And I should call Linda. She worked with him several times. She may have insight into his behavior and his relationship with Enrico and Chris Barber, not to mention anyone else we haven’t turned up yet.”

Steve patted Bob’s hand. “We should also check on some other alibis. For example, Sanders’s girlfriend, Gloria What’s-her-name.” Steve took a left a little too fast, and the tires squealed.

Bob caught his breath. “Sanders said he was with her all night, and on Wednesday they went to Santa Barbara to see Dr. Glassman. I’m going to call her when we’re back at the precinct.”

When Steve and Bob finally arrived at Dinah’s diner, it was past lunchtime. They had a quick soup and salad without seeing Bella or Jessica.

“Isn’t Jessica at work today?” Steve asked when Jane, another waitress, brought the bill.
